ABOUT US

OUR CHARTER

As the outstanding champion of the Rights of Man promulgated by the Revolution of 1789, Napoleon l was naturally in the front line of the first global ideological conflict. He thereby made himself the target of the most virulent attacks inspired by unbridled partisan hatreds, which have not entirely faded even today. The compilation of his history has been profoundly affected, resulting in falsehoods and erroneous judgements that were pounded out until they became the official version.

As a non-profit institution established around the world, the International Napoleonic Society has taken upon itself the single mission of rendering full justice to Napoleon.

For the sake of clarity and consistency, the INS desires above all to pursue its activities far removed from the agitation and confusion of polemical discussion groups. We are firmly opposed to the appalling anti-Napoleonic neurosis currently in vogue and we reject the base actions of the eighth ideological alliance presently attempting to somehow reverse the immense historical reputation of Napoleon. In pursuit of this great mission, the INS devotes all its energies to his defense, his entire defense and nothing but his defense.

This is why its forums, congresses and literary prizes are open only to those who unreservedly uphold its charter. They should be aware that they will find a warm welcome in our Napoleonic family.

French First Empire

At the International Napoleonic Society, we have imposed on ourselves the mission of rendering full justice to Napoleon while sweeping away the falsehoods and calumnies that impugn his honor and gravely insult his memory.

The purpose of the International Napoleonic Society is to promote the study of the Napoleonic Era in accordance with proper academic standards. To this end,the goal of the International Napoleonic Society is to gather the leading minds in this field for the purpose of creating, reviewing, commenting upon, making awards to, and financially supporting Napoleonic scholarship.

The International Napoleonic Society will encourage the publication of works of academic merit. To this end, we will provide the opportunity for scholarly articles to be published in our journal, Napoleonic Scholarship. We may also support the publication of works of academic merit, as well as the reprinting of important material no longer easily available.

It is important that original documents, as well as material available only in languages not commonly read by western scholars, be made available to Napoleonic Scholars. We will therefore encourage and support the translation and/or publication of such materials.

The International Napoleonic Society will encourage the creation and expansion of programs of study in the Napoleonic Era at accredited institutes of learning. The INS may sponsor lectures, tours, guest lecturing appearances, the endowment of professional chairs, the granting of scholarships, the production of exhibitions and other displays, as well as other academic and/or cultural activities as deemed appropriate.
