MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Ben Weider, CM, CQ, CStJ, PhD
President
International Napoleonic Society

As a Napoleonic enthusiast, scholar and aficionado, I take this opportunity to welcome you to the Official Website of the International Napoleonic Society (INS).

The INS is a nonprofit educational body, organized under the authority of the Government of Canada and headquartered in Montreal. The INS was established to promote the study of the Napoleonic Era in accordance with proper academic standards. To this end, the INS has gathered the leading minds in this field for the purpose of reviewing, commenting upon, presenting awards to, and financially supporting works of scholarship pertaining to this period.

Many of you know me, some through my sponsorship of sport, others as a devoted historian through my lectures and books: Assassination at St. Helena, The Murder of Napoleon, Assassination at St. Helena Revisited, and Napoleon: The Man Who Shaped Europe. During my research, I realized there is much we still do not know about the period and that much-untapped information lies hidden in archives, institutions, museums and private collections.

It is my earnest hope, and that of my colleagues, that the INS will lead the way in inspiring Napoleonic students, scholars and laymen to explore these resources and to share the information with you. The INS also believes that such meritorious undertakings deserve recognition. It is for this purpose that Fellowships will be granted to encourage and to reward major contributions to Napoleonic history.

I hope that you will agree with me that the International Napoleonic Society has much to offer.

Ben Weider, C.M., C.Q., C.St.J, Ph.D.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE VICE-PRESIDENT
and EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

J. David Markham

It is my pleasure to join President Ben Weider in welcoming you to the INS website. The Napoleonic Epoch is one of the most fascinating – and important – in history. Ben recognized this, and founded the International Napoleonic Society to promote greater and more accurate understanding of this period, in contrast to the persistent stereotypes and myths that often plague our understanding of Napoleon and his times. To this end, we hold International Napoleonic Congresses that bring together scholars from around the world. We have held these congresses in Italy, Israel, the Republic of Georgia and France, with plans for Poland in the summer of 2007.

We have produced a journal, sponsored scholarships and underwritten, with Ben’s kind generosity, a university chair devoted to Napoleonic studies. We also encourage the publication of important research and the translation of important documents through our Literary Award and the Legion of Merit.

As a Napoleonic scholar and author of several books on Napoleon, including the recent Napoleon for Dummies and Napoleon and Dr Verling on St Helena, I am very proud of the important contributions of the International Napoleonic Society.

This website reflects all that we do and I invite you to explore what we have to offer. If you have any questions or would like to offer assistance, please do not hesitate to contact either Ben or me via email or letter.

Wishing you every success in your Napoleonic endeavors,

J. David Markham, MA, MEd, FINS, LOM
Executive Vice-President and Editor-in-Chief
