Alicia Kachalova, Director of the State Borodino War and History Museum and Reserve, and J. David Markham, executive Vice-President of the International Napoleonic society, announced that the Fourth International Congress of the INS will be held at Borodino, Russia, the week of 3 August, 2002.
The congress will attract scholars from around the world to discuss the campaign of 1812, relations between Russia and France, personalities of the period such as Tsar Alexander I, Napoleon I, General Kutusov, Denis Davidoff, Marshal Michel Ney, and Marshal Joachim Murat. Other papers may consider Napoleon in Russian and other period literature and documents, and other issues appropriate to the period.
Director Kachalova has produced outstanding Borodino congresses and reenactments for the past 15 years, and has done an extraordinary job in preserving and promoting the history of the battlefield of Borodino. She is a Fellow in the INS and recipient of the Legion of Merit given by the society. In 1999, INS Vice-President Markham, also a recipient of the Legion of Merit, was the first American scholar to give an academic paper at the Borodino congress. Markham and the INS, under the leadership of President Ben Weider, have produced international congresses at Alessandria, Italy, near the battlefield of Marengo, and in Israel and the Republic of Georgia.
The Borodino museum and battlefield preserve has been undergoing expansion and improvement. Several buildings and a very picturesque area of land near the village of Borodino have recently been acquired. Some of the buildings are being converted into a hotel, café, and tourist information center. The battlefield itself may soon be listed as one of the World Heritage objects under the auspices of the United Nations.
This congress promises to be the opportunity of a lifetime to see one of the world's most important and well-preserved battlefield sites while hearing papers by some of the world's top scholars, including Russian research not well known in the west.
